Breast cancer is a leading cancer faced by South African women with one in 29 women diagnosed each year with this disease.

The financial year of our research funding projects is from 1 April to 31 March.

We have allocated almost R450 000 for breast cancer research for 2009/10 and we are anticipating to raise an additional amount of R570 000 by the end of March 2011.

Cancer research is expensive and also time-consuming - it can take years for a single study to be completed. We currently fund and support the following research projects at South African universities and other research institutions concerning breast cancer:

• Characterisation of the splicing and transcriptional regulatory system of the Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene in breast cancer
• Cyclopia and breast cancer
• Breast Cancer in South African Women: Germ-line PALB2 Mutations

• Therapeutic nutrient starvation and breast cancer. The effect of increased basal autophagy on doxorubicin treatment regimes
